Henry Ford’s Great-Grandson Bill took over the reins as CEO of the car giant just last October. Now he’s preparing to unveil what environmentalists hope will become a standard business practice. Ford has commissioned one of “Time Magazine’s” Heroes of the Planet, Architect William McDonough, to design a living roof for the Michigan plant. By turning the 10.4 acre rooftop into a plantable medium, millions of gallons of water will now be cleansed in a process called “phytoremediation”. The plants will filter water, bind carbon dioxide, breathe out oxygen and help insulate the plant.

Is this an expensive folly that has shareholders worried ? No. It costs millions less to build, will last decades more and will lower heating and cooling bills. This has people uttering the words “environmental stewardship” and Ford Plant in the same sentence !
