Greywater Greenbacks
“
Every time I brush my teeth, I water my raspberries! “ Boasts
Regenerator Claude Genest standing beside his reedbed greywater
purification system. “The first step is simply to change
our minds about the idea of “away” - which means
dealing with things locally. The second is to change our minds
about waste - It’s not waste, it’s a resource !” He
exclaims happily.
By running the water through a lined pond planted
with such notable “weeds” as
cattails and reeds, the same water that was previously fouling
Lake Champlain is now being put to productive use “I
not only clean dirty water and lower my need for fresh water,
I literally
turn it into a beautiful wildlife habitat and a profitable
and delicious yield.”
Host Claude Genest leads us through
an exploration of the technologies that save money, restore
ecologies and repair our damaged ecosystems.
FORD’s
Profits
through the (LIVING !) ROOF ...
Henry Ford’s Great-Grandson Bill took over the reins
as CEO of the car giant just last October. Now he’s preparing
to unveil what environmentalists hope will become a standard
business practice. Ford has commissioned one of “Time
Magazine’s” Heroes
of the Planet, Architect William
McDonough, to design a living
roof for the Michigan plant. By turning the 10.4 acre rooftop
into a plantable medium, millions of gallons of water will
now be cleansed in a process called “phytoremediation”.
The plants will filter water, bind carbon dioxide, breathe
out oxygen and help insulate the plant.
Is this an expensive
folly that has shareholders worried ?
No. It costs millions less to build, will last decades more
and
will lower heating and cooling bills. This has people uttering
the words “environmental stewardship” and Ford
Plant in the same sentence ! We’ll guide you through
the latest in living and Green roofs and you’ll see how
to apply it to your own home....
